1. Read house rules and follow them. If you don’t like or understand them, ask your host or the front desk for clarification and consider a different booking if you are displeased with the answer.

2. If you break something, tell your host or the front desk and expect to be charged replacement costs.

3. If you want to check in early or check out late, ask once and accept the answer you receive without pressuring your host. If the times or the rates don’t work for you, book a different place.

4. Communicate with your host or hotel to let them know your arrival and departure times — and confirm you have read house rules and check in information.

5. If your booking has a kitchen, don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink and garbage around the room when you leave. Ask about recycling protocols if you are unclear.

6. Don’t use bathroom towels to shine your shoes, remove your makeup or mop the floors. And for the love of god, stop leaving sopping wet towels on the upholstery and wood floors.

As you move through the world, have some grace, be respectful, be kind. Hotels and short term rentals are not yours to trash. A little sense of personal accountability goes a long way. Your temporary lodging is a real place where disrespectful actions and careless acts are far more impactful on hard working people than disrespectful words tossed carelessly about on social media.

Be a better guest.
